ASUS M3n78-EH "Still waiting for root device"

I've been trying to install Niresh Mavericks on an old pc I dug out.  It is an amd64 x2 3600+ on an ASUS M3N78-EH motherboard (GeForce 8200 chipset), has 2 gigs of ram and gfx card nvidia 8800 GT.  I followed the Mac Breaker guide to write osx-mavericks.dmg to a usb pen drive and I boot from that.  When given the option I use the boot command "amd64 -v USBBusFix=Yes" but I always get stuck at "Still waiting for boot device".

The HDD is a samsung SP1203N (according to bios) and it is an IDE drive.  I have set it to be a slave and told the dvd drive (also IDE) to be master.  The board supports SATA but I have no sata drive.

Is there anything else I can try to make this work?  Many Thanks
